Every child in New Mexico deserves a great teacher. Research indicates that students perform better when taught by experienced, well-prepared, and effective educators. In some schools, especially those receiving Title I funding, students may have a higher chance of being taught by teachers who are newer to the profession, teaching outside their subject area, or still developing in their practice.
Federal law (Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by ESSA, Section 1111(h)(1)(C)(ix)) requires all states to report these data each year and to take action when there are disproportionate numbers of ineffective, inexperienced, or out-of-field teachers in Title I schools compared to other schools.
NMPED ensures that families in New Mexico can clearly see where these challenges exist and how the state is working to address them by sharing this information on NM Vistas. This is part of New Mexico’s broader commitment to ensuring that all students, regardless of their location or school, have equitable access to excellent teaching and learning opportunities.
